Welcome to Opal Class
Hello! My name is Miss Harrison and I am the teacher of Opal class. We are very lucky to have Mrs Cording, Mrs Waggott and Mr Patterson supporting us in our learning at different points in the week. Take a look at our page to find out what we are learning about.
English
In English, we have been exploring the poem ‘Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough We have created a class text map of the poem and have recalled it from memory. We then read and enjoyed a range of different sound poems to help inspire us with our writing. We have then been creating our very own sound poems all about school life. We have also been performing our poems to each other, thinking carefully about our use of voice and expression.
Maths
In maths, we have been focusing on number and place value. We have been using a range of manipulative resources to represent numbers to 1,000. We have identified the value of each digit in our numbers and have used part whole models and place value grids to partition them.
Music
In music, we have been enjoying listening to music from South Africa and using the instruments to play the percussion parts of songs. We are learning about staff notation too.
Science
In Science, we are learning about the human body. We are looking at the muscular, skeletal, nervous and digestive systems. We are looking in depth at how these systems work together in the digestive process.

Weekly Homework
Reading - If pupils read 3 times a week (and this is signed in their reading records) they will be able to move their name along the reading chart and will be awarded a reading certificate. They will go into the weekly draw and if their lollipop stick is chosen they get a treat!
Spellings - Every Monday pupils are sent home with statutory spellings to practise for the spelling tests the following Monday!
Times Tables - To enable children to progress within maths it is essential that they can recall their times tables up to 12 x 12. Weekly practice will help children to improve their recall. In Y3 our focus is on securing the 10, 2 and 5 times tables and learning the 3, 4 and 8 times table. We will be using TTRS to assess and support our learning of the times table in class. The websites below have a range of games that can support children with this:
