History
The History curriculum at Dunsville Primary is carefully planned and structured to ensure that current learning builds upon prior substantive and disciplinary knowledge and that the school’s approaches are informed by current pedagogy. We encourage pupils to explore the past by asking questions and making links across the curriculum. History gives pupils a chance to explore a wide range of sources from which the past may come alive.
The fundamental knowledge, skills and understanding of the subject are set out in the National Curriculum programme of study and key skills are identified and covered through our delivery of the Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC). There are 6 History themes taught across each academic year in KS2 and 3 History themes in KS1. A History Long Term Plan is in place to accommodate the mixed age classes and to ensure the children’s historical learning is appropriate and sequential. Each unit of History has 6 or more progressive lesson plans, knowledge organisers with focus vocabulary to be understood and applied in context and a multiple choice quiz to assess key knowledge at the end of each unit
In Nursery and Reception classes, History is related to the objectives set out in the EYFS Curriculum, in particular developing children’s knowledge and understanding of the world.
We want our children to experience first-hand how to apply historical skills using a range of primary and secondary resources, which will develop their confidence and aid them beyond their educational setting. A key message at Dunsville Primary is the importance of cultural capital and how local history has affected our lives today. We strive to teach the children the link between local history, British history and that of the wider world. We aspire to create curious and knowledgeable young people who hold a deep understanding and appreciation of the discipline of history, and are able to sift and weigh evidence to be able to formulate their own opinions and perspectives of the world.
History allows our pupils to compare and contrast, to examine how and why things have changed, to learn about historical characters and expand their research skills. We encourage pupils to make links and comparisons to help them understand how people have lived in the past and current experiences and events in modern life. We encourage first hand experiences through handling real artefacts and wherever possible arranging field work visits to relevant sites of historical interest in the region or bringing in specialists for in-school workshops.

KS1 recently had a Roman Day at school to start their History topic 'Life in Roman Britain'. Everyone (including staff!) dressed up as Roman citizens.
Year 1 & 2 recently enjoyed a visit to the new Danum library, museum and art gallery. They took part in workshops and explored the historical artefacts in the museum.
Year 3 & 4 recently enjoyed an Egyptian Day at school. Pupils (and staff!) dressed in ancient Egyptian clothing and learnt all about their way of life.
Year 5 & 6 recently enjoyed a visit to the new Danum museum and library. They took part in workshops related to their topic on the Industrial Revolution.
